Thayne Smith passed away Thursday, March 16, 2006 in St George, Utah after a two year struggle with cancer. He was welcomed to this earth by his loving parents Dowell LaMar and Deon Creager Smith on November 11, 1950 in Ogden, Utah. He married Susanna Mueller in 1969. They had one child, Sheri Sue and were later divorced. In 1980, he married Jan Goodsell who brought a dear ten year old child named Tallie into his life. Thayne and Jan recently celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary. Thayne graduated from Bonneville High School in 1969. Thayne was very musically gifted graduating from the Sherwood School of Music. He sang the solo at high school graduation. Thayne joined the Army Intelligence Corps as a linguist speaking French, German and Vietnamese and served in Vietnam 1972 to 1973. Thayne was awarded the Medal of Honor. After discharge from the Army, he attended Weber State College and spent his summers working for the Forest Service in Yellow Pine, Idaho. Thayne worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as an Engineer for 29 years. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) Division 136 serving as the President until his retirement. Thayne enjoyed snow skiing, fly fishing, boating, golfing and camping. Thayne excelled in every sport he participated in. Golfing with his buddies was his passion in the last few years. Thayne was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was a pianist for his church and had an opportunity to play in the Salt Lake Tabernacle. He is survived by his wife Jan, his children Sheri (Brad) Basinger, Tallie Martinez, granddaughters Taylor and Alexys Basinger, his parents D. LaMar and Deon Smith and brother L. Kent (Tonya) Smith. The family extends appreciation to Doctors Robert Harris, Carl Gray, and Donald Bryan. We wish to express our gratitude to Applegate Hospice Staff in Layton and Washington, Utah. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at Leavitt’s Mortuary, 836 36th Street, Ogden. Family will be meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 and one hour prior to the services at the mortuary. Interment at Leavitt’s Aultorest Memorial Park.
